Bringing Back the Four Poster Bed

Let’s take a quick look back into the history of beds. Really, a quick look indeed. In today’s modern times, you can find adjustable beds that can be controlled remotely and have the ability to adjust to individual sleeping preferences. Some are made to be for the elderly or handicapped. Others still have individual numbering systems for firmness and then there are memory foam style mattresses. All of these exist along side futons, waterbeds, Murphy beds, etc.

Each type of bed has its own advantages and specific uses. The point is, they all have some features that make them attractive choices. Now, on to the history of the bed you’re interested in, the poster bed. The four poster bed dates back to the 16th century. It was, and still is, a kingly bed. Originally, they were made of hand crafted and carved oak. There would also be a piece known as a ‘tester’ that would be the canopy to this bed. In fact, the term canopy bed is another term for this style, though they are unique in their own right. So, this tester would hang curtains that could be closed to surround the bed. This would add privacy and also keep the sleeping individuals free from windy draughts and colder weather in times of essentially no insulation.

The modern version of these beds can either be made of metal or you can still buy a wooden four poster bed. Modern homes can get away with a steel or other metal bed frame or canopy style bed. The canopy is often a cloth or fabric material that can be drawn back mostly for looks in today’s age of modern insulation and indoor climate features. If you’re looking for a nice four poster bed, there are many places online that can help you get just the one that will fit nicely in your master royal suite!
