Design Principles for a Beautiful Living Room

A beautiful room it is always a composition of many principles working together which speak volumes about the taste of the decorator. No element can be dismissed as unimportant as everything must work together to create a pleasing picture. If you want your living room to look beautiful, here are some basic design principles to work with.

1. Use Natural Materials

All things being equal natural materials will always look better than synthetics. They often have a depth to them which cannot be made by machine and they often last better too. If you want quality use a wool rug and not a polypropylene one. Using a cotton and linen mix window curtain instead of a polyester one, will result in your windows bringing nature and  the outdoors closer.

2. Do not Compromise on Quality

It is better to have fewer things than a lot of low quality objects in your room. If you use natural materials you will already have a head start on quality but check the quality of fabric and construction too. There are cheap cottons and quality ones, good stitching and bad.

3. Let Form Follow Function

The objects in the room should be functional as well as decorative. Avoid frills and fussiness and choose clean, simple lines in furniture and soft furnishings. A plain curtain panel with a tab top hanging from a beautiful curtain rod will beat out all the swags and tails in the world in the design stakes.

4. Create a Plain Backdrop

Choose neutral flooring, walls and furniture as the best possible background to your living room. You can then easily add the accessories which reflect your personal taste. If there is too much happening with the walls and floor then there is no room for adding decorative touches anywhere else with cushions, curtains or artwork.

5. Go for Unique Touches

If you choose hand made over mass production you will take your living room up a notch. Of course, no one can afford to have everything hand made. It just isn’t practical. But think of introducing a little artwork or a few handmade accessories to make your room special. One simple, beautiful object can transform a plain room.
