Pine bedroom furniture is young, modern, and inexpensive. However, today, too many people favor branded products. Four or five decades ago, before outsourcing became common, this made sense – brands became famous because they proved themselves through their high quality. But modern branded goods have fallen a long way since then. Few branded goods today last long. This includes furniture. The manufacturers that make these items favor a low production cost so that they can make more profit. That means most modern bedroom furniture is made from cheap, low quality materials like plywood or medium density fiberboard (MDF). Real oak, real pine bedroom furniture, and other home furnishings made from solid wood are now considered luxuries.
There is good reason why pine was widely used in the 1800-s and 1900-s to make furniture – it is a very beautiful wood with its natural grains and knots. This is one reason why even branded headboards and dressers made from MDF stick a thin veneer of real pine on the outer surfaces. Real pine wood bedroom furniture does not need to be painted. Beds and wardrobes made from pine are usually stained to better highlight out their grain markings and then waxed or varnished to protect them. That is not to say you cannot find white-colored bedroom furniture made from pine, just that painting pine wood is a terrible waste.
It is not just the beautiful grains of pine wood that make it look better than MDF when used to make beds, wardrobes and other furniture. It is also the ornamentation that can be used to decorate these furniture. Furniture made from solid woods like pine can be carved with intricate designs. The beautiful Victorian and Queen Anne styled furniture are a case in point. While MDF furniture can be molded and shaped to a certain extent, there are clear limitations.
Esthetically, pine does not only look better than MDF, it smells better. Fresh cut pine releases a natural and pleasant fragrance that many people enjoy. There are some premium furniture makers who specialize in crafting unfinished pine bedroom furniture for this market. Unfinished furniture of this kind is polished smooth but otherwise left bare and unfinished. Of course, they are best placed in a bedroom where the temperature and humidity is controlled.
Like any other furniture made from wood, pine furniture needs to be properly maintained if it is to last long. For one thing, pine gets scratched and dented more easily than hardwoods like oak. Of course, MDF is even more vulnerable. Fortunately, fixing up wooden furniture is easy – just wax it or revarnish it at regular intervals, e.g. once a year.
Not many people bother to polish and buff up their discount MDF furniture. After all, who seriously expects them to last even a decade? But pine is different. It is more expensive, and with proper care can easily survive two or three decades of regular use.
Buying pine bedroom furniture is a good investment for the future. While it is certainly more expensive than MDF furniture, it is also a great deal more beautiful and longer lasting. If you appreciate quality, you will appreciate pine.
